Dapper – an iTunes sync tool for your Digital Audio Player

Two weeks back I bought a FiiO X5 Digital Audio Player from Amazon. I was tired of dragging around my Centrance HiFi-M8 to get the best quality sound out of my iPhone, and I was still limited to 64GB of storage on the iPhone. The X5 can take 2x 128GB MicroSD cards, so I could actually store all my lossless music on the thing.

The issue with anything-other-than-an-iDevice is syncing… but this doohickey connects via USB and essentially shows up on the machine as a drive… so I set to work and wrote Dapper last weekend. It automates copying files and playlists to an X5 including the correct formatting etc.. and a handy dandy slider to select how much music to put on card A vs Card B.

Well, two weeks is a long time, and I have returned the X5 and got an Astell and Kern AK100_II to work with.

Its better in terms of UI by far. In fact after hunting through 3000 songs on the X5 with a scroll wheel I am seriously doubting that the PonoPlayer will be any good whatsoever with its paltry interface… The AK100 is an android device and shows up only in software that supports MTP over USB… If I can get Simple-MTPFS going on OSX I will be in business – its a library that mounts MTP devices as drives under OSX, in which case Dapper can operate as per usual.

In the mean time I have bought a shim that essentially does Simple-MTPFS and this is the result – splitting my library roughly 1/3 on the internal storage (64GB) and 2/3 on the SD card (128GB)

Dapper is available to poke around with on my site here.

  1. Is Dapper only sync the iTunes playlists which consist the name Dapper? I used to sort my mp3 into playlists with artists’ names in iTunes, is it possible sync those playlists just like syncing with iPod via iTunes? Thx…

  2. I’ve downloaded this and I’m giving it a try, but is there other software needed to make this work? SyncMate seems to be mentioned often. I have a MacBook Air and an AK100.

    I’ve also purchased a license

  3. i just bought your dapper thinking i would need it for my x1, but let me tell you, i just got ride of the x1 for the A&K jr. i havent opened the box yet but can you tell me or give me some hints on how to download my itunes library onto the jr? any help would be awesome. thanks

  4. I love it – it works great! One feature request! 🙂 A new customization: Truncate filename! My filenames are long and while the computer has not problem, they make X3 go loopy – it would be great for dapper to truncate on copy, maybe to a max filename length – have too many files to rename- itunes unfortunately expands filename instead of leaving expanded info in tag! 😦
Keep up the good work dapper is wonderful!

  5. Hi Jeremy,

Dapper is great but I am having a problem with transferring playlists to my FIIO X3II. The contents of my playlists are certainly being transferred but playlists themselves are not showing up on the DAP. Any advice?

    Thanks!

      1. But will the playlist be available with the songs in that order or is it just syncing the songs and they get sorted by name or artist? Because I tried to do it this way and the songs are on my Fiio x5.. and if I access them through the artist it plays them, but if I try to play the song by going in to the particular playlist it says that it can’t find any data for all the songs. Can you help me out? Because this was the most important feature for me in the iPod classic. I invested alot of time in making particular playlist for different occasions and I would like to have my music in this particular order. greetings

      2. It should play the songs in the playlist just fine. There could be two reasons this is not happening.
1… Are there special characters in the file me that maybe the FiiO is having trouble with?
2… You may need to go to the settings, to the last tab and select your dap again so we format the playlist correctly

Totally agree; I would be pretty upset if it didn’t work after $20. (For others, there’s a demo on our website to test drive first)

  7. Jeremy, I am new to non apple digital audio players but am sick of my ipod classics dying on me. I want to purchase a Fiio X5 2nd gen and want to use your dapper software to transfer files….what is the best way to get dapper on my PC with windows 10? Thanks for any info.

  9. hi
    i meed help
trying to synchronize my itune librairie with FIIO X5 III i got the following error
Dapper is halting this sync session:

Too many errors have occurred, something is wrong.

We recommend stopping, rebooting the DAC and reconnecting it before trying again.
